Heworth Colliery – Mining Infographic

Brief:

The Idea behind this project was to display the horrific death tolls of the Heworth miners in an informative and educational manner. The initial concept for the project came to me after researching some local mining history, I was shocked to learn the ages of the miners who died in the pits as well as the horrific ways in which they died. Most importantly, the records display the names of every single fallen pit worker. These were all people, with families, desperately trying to get by.

I decided early on that I would like to produce this project as a web infographic. Mainly because it would be easier to display the graphic to its full potential as you can scroll to descend deeper into pits. The colour scheme for this was originally earthly mining colours, I soon shied away from this though as it looked too dark and unengaging.
